2020: A Haiku

This year has been a doozy. Sometime in summer of 2020, I decided to write a haiku for each month of the year. Each month since, I’ve added to my poem. Without further ado:

❄️ January ❄️
It’s 2020.
New decade. New year. Fresh start.
Hit the ground running.

❤️ February ❤️
Rumblings of virus,
But life is fine here - for now.
Just normal. Routine.

🦠 March 🦠
Beware ides of March!
World crumbled before my eyes.
Everything cancelled.

☔️ April ☔️
Stir crazy quarantine.
Lots of baking; school at home.
Garden brings new life.

🌺 May 🌺
Seeing people brings
refreshment. But grief follows
with Church divided.

🍓 June 🍓
George Floyd killed. Mounting
anxiety. Surgery, then...
panic. Burnout reached.

☀️ July ☀️
New morning mercies.
Travel, sunsets, birthdays, fun.
Still the garden blooms.

🌻 August 🌻
Bright summer days, then
ready for school. No! City —
burning to the ground.

🍎 September 🍎
Sunshine and apples.
Glimpses of normalcy as
the school year begins.

🍁 October 🍁
Sniffles cause chaos.
Cancelled plans. Weary, burdened.
Collecting pumpkins.

🦃 November 🦃
Where else can I go?
Come to me weary, burdened.
I will give you rest.

🎄 December 🎄
A thrill of hope: the
Savior born to die for us!
Tidings of comfort.

⭐️ Conclusion ⭐️
Are you there, God? Yes.
Through it all, God is faithful.
Faithful to the end.
