The Alternate Route

The usual route to school is under construction, so we need to take an alternate route right now. This route has a couple spots where we get a perfect glimpse of the sun rising over the lake.

We drive and pass the Unitarian church. We pass two cemeteries. We pass the businesses that got burned to the ground last year by rioters. But over and around it all, still the same sun rises again, morning after morning.

Halfway through the drive, we turn off the music for morning prayers. Every day we include “Lord, thank you that you are more faithful than the sunrise.” Yes, because even as we live in a world full of sin and death and groaning, God faithfully remains over and above it all, sovereignly working in every detail.

And then I bring them to school, and as I hug them, I repeat as I do every day: “remember Jesus is always with you.” Because He is. The sun reminded us.

Maybe after the construction is done we’ll still take the alternate route to school.
