This Article is Not About Buicks

SPOILER ALERT: This article is not about Buicks.

I can’t even get gas without being bombarded, guys. No, I’m not talking about Wham’s “Last Christmas.” At the gas station I saw an ad on the little screen for some Buick SUV. “Don’t forget about YOU this Christmas. Treat yourself to a new S(YOU)V!”

Guys, I don’t think any of us are in danger of not being selfish enough this Christmas, or ever.

Here’s the thing. In Jesus, you never risk being forgotten. Quite the opposite: you are so very REMEMBERED. After all, that’s what we celebrate this season, isn’t it? The Promised One, after all those years, had finally arrived! You’re not forgotten after all. No, and not only that, but you are remembered by one who knows your struggles and sorrows. He took on frail flesh so He could die. He died so you might live. You are so very remembered, friends. And you are so dearly loved.

We are remembered by Him much better than we could ever remember ourselves. We don’t need to take it upon ourselves to make sure we don’t get overlooked this Christmas. We can be free to forget ourselves, because we’ve already been fully, overwhelmingly, overflowingly remembered.

It’s inescapable, this message: Treat yourself! You deserve it! Don’t forget to take a little “me time.” But the Bible says: Whoever wishes to be first among you, shall be your slave. Be like the Son of Man who did not come to be served, but to serve; and to give his soul a ransom for many.” If you want to become more fully yourself, become more like Christ. If you want to be remembered this Christmas, don’t give yourself more, but look to the One who gave everything to you already. And then go and love as you have been loved: lavishly, unbegrudgingly, joyfully.

"He who counts the stars and calls them by their names is in no danger of forgetting His own children." -Charles Spurgeon.

From one friend who doesn’t need a new SUV to another, merry Christmas 🎁 .
